A plug-in panel needs a proper socket outside and a circuit that's been checked. That's what we do. We mount the panel where the rules allow it, and we do the form for National Grid Electricity Distribution with you. Bring your own kit or let us supply one from the register.

A socket outside, done properly
A panel in a garden or on a wall needs power to leave it safely. That means a proper outdoor socket, not a cable run through a window.
The outdoor plug and socket have to carry an IP55 rating or better, whether they sit on the house wall or nearer the panel itself.
We check the circuit behind the socket before anything gets plugged in. Older wiring is the real risk with these devices, and a lot of the housing across Birmingham and the Black Country is old enough that it is worth the look.

We fit either way. What matters is that the device is on the register, not who paid for it.

Already bought one online. We look at the make and model, check it against the ENA Type Test Register, and fit it if it clears the register.

Worth knowing before you buy a kit
Why a timber balcony or timber cladding fails the planning test
Since 27 August 2026, the planning right most plug-in installations depend on has carried an exclusion it never used to have: a wooden wall, a balcony or an enclosure, or any part of a house finished in timber cladding, none of it qualifies any more. There is a year of grace either way, a transitional window closing on 27 August 2027, to carry on under whichever version of the rules suits the house.
A house that falls outside the right can only get there through a full planning application, and the government's own figures say that can cost more than the kit itself. We check what the surface actually is before anyone is quoted a figure.

Telling the operator is part of the job
Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and the Black Country sit in one distribution licence area, and the operator for it is National Grid Electricity Distribution (West Midlands) plc. Our map is a working one, so we confirm the postcode with the operator before anything is sent. Ringing 105 reaches the right company for free from anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales, without needing anyone's map at all.
Registering also opens the door to an export tariff, where one is on offer, so it is worth doing even beyond the rules.
What people ask before they book
Can I have more than one?
No. The product rules allow one device per final ring circuit, but the network rules are tighter and hold it to one per household, so that is the number that counts.
What if I already own a kit?
Send us the make and model with your postcode. We check it against the ENA Type Test Register and fit it if it is listed as compliant.
Can I add a battery?
No. Storage was left out of what was approved in August, whether it is a separate battery or built into the device.
Do I need planning permission?
It depends on the house. Meet the conditions in the permitted development right and there is no application. Fall outside them, which now includes a timber wall or balcony, and there is one.
What does it cost?
We do not publish a figure, because the socket work and the kit both vary by house. We would rather look at yours and quote it properly.
